Hedge fund unveils corruption in pursuit to be paid
A U.S.-based hedge fund has proved that some poor African countries would be able to pay creditors if national wealth were not siphoned off by corrupt leaders. Private detectives and forensic accountants working for one "vulture" fund, Elliott Associates, cut through the straw companies and hidden bank accounts that allowed leaders in the Republic of the Congo to spend oil wealth at Paris boutiques while their people lived on about $1 a day. Despite outrage from those arguing that poor countries should be forgiven their debts, the Brazzaville government settled after documents were made public. The Times (London) (15 Jun.)

Bear Stearns Hedge Fund Managers are getting indicted for starting the credit crisis. According to media sources, Federal prosecutors are preparing to file criminal charges against managers of two Bear Stearns Cos. hedge funds whose collapse helped mark the start of the credit crisis. The U.S. Attorney's office in Brooklyn is in the process of completing interviews of witnesses and other key people in the case this week, and has indicated to lawyers with interest in the case that indictments could be imminent. The former Bear Stearns managers, Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin, managed two high-profile bond portfolios for the securities firm's asset-management unit. No doubt they are one of the helpers in triggering the crisis. But are they really the root cause of the credit crisis?

The Pluck of the Irish
June 16, 2008 0654 GMT
European Union foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg to try to figure out how to save the reforming Lisbon Treaty after the Irish rejected it in a referendum, but as yet there does not appear to be the semblance of an idea, let alone a plan. Europe, says Colin Chapman, is increasingly becoming a region where members’ own interests count most.
