Sounding the depths of the credit crisis
It is nice to see that Goldman Sachs might be human after all. But an alternative interpretation of the sharp reduction over the past three weeks in forecasts for the US bank's first quarter results is altogether more worrying. Could it be that things are so bad even Goldman Sachs, which seemed last year to be operating in a parallel universe to the rest of Wall Street, is heading for a fall?

Aggressive investors target auction-rate bond market
Investors have moved into the vacuum after failed auctions drove up borrowing costs in the auction-rate bond market for U.S. municipal borrowers. "Aggressive institutional investors have moved in to pick up auction-rate issues at short-term rates ranging from 5% to as much as 15% or more," Citigroup municipal strategist George Friedlander said. The European Union this week is likely to approve a new code of conduct it wants rich countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, China, Singapore and South Korea to impose on their state-owned trillion-dollar wealth funds. Like Americans, the Europeans want the foreign funds, but not foreign political influence.
