A former natural gas trader for a hedge fund facing congressional scrutiny yesterday disputed the findings of Senate investigators who blamed high natural gas prices last winter on the company's speculative bets.

Financial markets moved sharply Thursday after Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke spoke in front of a joint conference of Women in Banking and Finance and the Exchequer Society in Washington. The speech seemed unusually clear, indicating that the Fed was putting inflation fears on the back burner and concentrating on the sharper-than-expected deterioration in the U.S. economy. The speech shifted market expectations toward a 50-basis point cut, to 3.75%, at the Jan. 29-30, meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee.
