M&A Outlook: Fewer Private-Equity Deals And More Strategic Takeovers
This year may mark the end of a golden age, of sorts, for mergers and acquisitions, as a string of annual all-time dollar volume highs is likely to culminate with a total approaching $4 trillion worldwide. Private-equity firms' diminished ability to forge debt-financed takeovers in the wake of the recent credit market liquidity squeeze may put an end to the streak of M&A records that began in 2002. And as private-equity interest wanes, we expect to see smaller, strategic deals.

The U.S. economic data are coming in much stronger than expected. Real GDP rose 3.9% (annual rate) in the second quarter, and payrolls jumped 166,000 in October. But the Federal Reserve's quarter-point interest rate cut on Oct. 31, suggests that they believe the worst is yet to come. We agree that the softest stretch is likely to be over the next three quarters.

Iran has met a key demand of the U.N. nuclear agency, handing over long-sought blueprints showing how to mold uranium metal into the shape of warheads, diplomats said Tuesday.
IRAN: Iran has given the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) blueprints that show how to mold uranium metal into warheads, diplomats said. The Associated Press cited anonymous diplomats accredited to the agency as saying Mohammed Saeedi, deputy director of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, hand-carried the drawings to IAEA deputy Oli Heinonen in Vienna.
U.K., IRAN: The United Kingdom plans to push to curb investments in Iran if the Iranian government fails to address the nuclear issue, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Nov. 12, according to media reports. Unless EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and the International Atomic Energy Agency provide positive reports on Iran's activities, Brown said his country "will lead in seeking tougher sanctions both at the United Nations and in the European Union, including on oil and gas investment and the financial sector."
