Screenwriters' Strike Portends Dramatic Episode For Broadcasting & Entertainment Industry
Traditionally regarded as the union with the least clout for a strike, the Writers Guild of America surprised the entertainment and investment community with its walkout. Although we do not currently expect ratings will be affected, the strike could affect broadcasters' and producers' business operations, brand franchises, and potentially, longer term profitability. Key issues at stake in the negotiation include pension and health care contributions, but also, more importantly, compensation for DVD sales and evolving digital uses of writers' work.

IRAN, IRAQ: Iran has devised a plan to restore stability in Iraq that includes the possibility of expelling various private security firms and integrating militias into the security forces, Press TV reported, citing an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman. Iranian diplomats proposed the plan at a conference on Iraqi security held in Turkey over the weekend, the spokesman said. Also proposed was a two-year suspension of efforts to find solutions to such issues as oil sharing and the status of the multiethnic city of Kirkuk. The plan also calls for amnesty for prisoners detained for "acting against the government" and the opening of embassies by Iraq's neighbors.
